What Makes You Itch?

A friend just posted this video on his blog. It slapped me right across the face! Therefore, I wanted to share it with you.

Perhaps it will inspire you like it did me to keep stretching, reaching, pushing and working towards that work which is constantly yearning to be fulfilled inside my heart.

But seriously, don’t watch if you don’t want to change your life!

Question: What would you do if money were no object, really?

    I recently read Outliers and one of the things that hit me was that all the people mentioned who are tops and experts in their fields and who have excelled – it took at least 10,000 hours of studying and learning their field.  I can’t imagine spending 10,000 hours on something I had no interest in!!  So the video makes perfect sense – how can you become a “master”at anything you are not willing to spend all your time learning about?  Even though money is an “object” for me – I am doing what really thrills me.  I am fortunate in that my husband is supporting us (thankfully teaching which is what he loves).  However, even working a job using other skills I have, I would and was still doing this.  I guess I’m getting my 10,000 hours!

      Hahaha yes indeed Ann! Great point and no, I could not spend 10,000 hours doing something I hated. I would never last!

    I’m sacred to be in love with something that doesn’t really provide well. I have a family of 6. It takes real money to provide well for this family.

    I can’t afford to try chase something with no real defined path for success.

    It’s like when I was a podcaster. I had a complete blast recording 54 episodes of the Blue Collar Business Podcast but there is no clearly defined path for a career in podcasting.

    I can’t afford a path without a pre-determined destination. Time is short.

          UHHHH YEA it would be a great book!!!!
          I cried my eyes out! What a heart wrenching story with a wonderful ending! You two, what courage and persistance!! So you have 4 girls total?? How old is Jessica now?

    Gary Barkelow showed this to us at the Men’s Calling retreat.  It is powerful indeed.  He said we should all consider ourselves “artists”.  We bring our art when we are living out of our heart.  I am just thankful that my wife and I are aware of this so we don’t try to hedge our daughter into a field of study that “makes money”.  I am continually learning to bring my heart and gifts to those around me, no matter what I am doing.

      Michael,

      I remember hearing the term “artist” in this sense first from Seth Godin. I think it provides a great picture of what we’re created to be and do.
